An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world - a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.
I thought this was a beautiful film which, bizarre as it may sound, was very easy to relate to. As a child, I certainly never sailed to an island filled with over-sized monsters, but the emotions that Max feels and the lessons he learns are universal. Max didn't visit some plushy playland, some magical world full of wonder, he visited the same world which we have all grown up in..his was just disguised a bit. This was a wonderful film, and I will gladly show it to my future children without a second thought.
I thought this film was so well done.
I used to love the story as a child, and I pretty sure I even had a plush max !
As many other comments have stated that this film isnt really for children, I would have to disagree, I think that its a good film, but has deeper meanings for adults to enjoy.
It was quite a dark and somewhat depressing in parts, but I disagree with some of the other comments about the end..infact I thought that the ending was inlighting and happy and brought the film to a fantastic end, with no words needed.
The child who played Max was fantastic, and the effects in this film well they were just immense.
I will be buying this film.
And I recommend it.
See beyond what others have put down as just depressing, see what really happens at the end
[SPOILER]
when every monster howls in unison, showing the coming together of the group, when mother and son say nothing and sit in perfect comfort and love
it was ok i guess .. were dark and gloomy as said before .. i wouldnt really watch it again to be honest .. its all about misunderstanding and sadness and lonliness and everything very depressing
I'm not entirely sure who this movie is aimed at. I wouldn't call it a childrens movie to be honest. It's really boring and quite depressing, so do yourself a favor and stay away..
just weird !! doesnt really satisfy the kid leaves and let everyone sad as they were in the beginning!! no resolution and we still have sad monsters!! wtf?? confusing!
This is being marketed towards kids? Wonderful film but unbelievably SAD and DARK - even slightly scary in some parts. I have never in my life cried from a movie but this had me in tears at the end. I really liked the film but I wouldn't recommend this to anybody below 4th or 5th grade. It's not a 'happy' movie.
You guys are weird. How can a kid running around in pajamas playing with monsters trying to keep them happy be dark and sad?? Maybe some of you were abused as a kid and everything is dark. No blood and gore and no cursing. I'd take my boy and girl to see it.
The movie was so depressing. We have the kids book and think it is a cute story, but the movie takes the kids book to a very gloomy, depressing, destructive place. I need to go watch Barney now for a pick me up. Anyway, I just thought I would share for anyone thinking of seeing it.
It must be very difficult to turn a 17 page book or whatever it is into a 100 minute movie, but Spike Jonze did it very effectively. It's not my favorite, but the story, what little there is, kept me entertained and I was mostly amazed at how well the young actor Max Records played his part. Other than that, the fun loving book I remember wasn't there.
[SPOILER]
Carol and others had way too much emotion, I guess each one was supposed to be part of Max, or something, but I have no idea. It got to a point where I just wanted to fast forward. Though the scary scenes were pretty scary :P
This movie is amazing. And could people please stop writing its not a kids movie .. it has already been written like 100 times on this page.
This is like kids are really like: wild. So no hes not bad-tempered, or like a bad-tempered teenanger. Christ. So many people are so narrow minded in here :/ Its a beautiful, real and honest movie. Kids are not like in disney movies.. luckily
is what made this movie. I loved the book when i was a kid. They could have done much more with this.. almost disappointment, but for the graphics and music (which sets the mood of the film) I have to give it a 3/5
Was my fav book growing up and the movie doesnt disappoint! its creative, and funny. I thought it would be cheesy and crappy lol. Very good watch 5/5 for me!
5/5 So happy to see this as a movie! It's honestly more for adults than kids I'd say because it has a lot of in depth meaning to it that kids wouldn't get.
[SPOILER]
As for those of you who are saying "what the heck why did he get cake in the ending, he needs to be spanked" You have to look at it from the view point of a scared over worked mother who probably doesn't have a lot of time for her kids.. something like that is horrible and in the end you're just glad they're safe. Besides, you never know if he really did get punished or not!
This was an amazing film. Yes, it is dark for a kid's movie but it was still very enjoyable and no the kid isn't a brat. 8/10 you won't regret watching it
I loved the little guy's acting in this film. I did find myself getting bored, but I believe that is because I was trying to so hard to remember if I actually read the book or not. It was a nice one time watch.
As a kid, when this was read to my 2nd grade class, I fell in love with this book. Every time it was my turn to pick out the book for story time I would choose this one. It captured my imagination.
I haven't read it nor have I picked it since then.
This is a very dark movie and quite frightening at times. It's also very sad and tragic. There are also some heart warming moments, that will leave you with a warm glow.
All of the characters go through love/hate moments and some characters you never really like.
But what a wonderful fairytale/fantasy. All good movies elicit some kind of emotional reaction, which this movie does in spades. This is not a movie for children. This is a movie for adults. It follows all the rules for a fairy tale and no fairy tale was ever all unicorns and rainbows. Every fairy tale I remember has some truly awful things happen. The big bad wolf eats a grandmother, the wicked stepmother poisons/enslaves/plots to kill the heroine and children kick witches into ovens. This movie is no different. This movie also has the ending that fits a fairytale. It's not a logical ending, but a "happily ever after" ending.
The story is very good, the acting and the special f/x are amazing. The plot flows very well, and even the pacing is spot on.
I'm no longer in 2nd grade and haven't been for a number of years, but this movie captured my imagination again, and for the first time.
Great movie, reminds me of 2nd Grade as well (must of been a curriculum requirement) The acting was fabulous, the raw emotion really got to me. Reminded me of what it feels like in the real world, and when I was younger and how people left me out of the picture usually. Not a movie for kids because kids wouldn't understand and would be frightened. Other than that overall amazing movie.
5/5
It's sad though that people rate this movie badly because of the emotion it delivers, and probably because they were with their children during the movie, so for redemption they rate the movie down.
It's also sad that people believe the kid was a brat. All kids are brats; everyone should know that by now, but they are brats because of how they are raised, and this kid ran away because his mother wasn't paying attention to him, and his sister didn't care about nor spent time with him anymore, and he is too young to know what happens when you grow up. Show some compassion will you? You'd run away too.
I thought this movie should be watched by all parents as well to see what "some" kids go through and experience. It's a heads-up for parents that we need to keep firm "continual" (keyword) guidance if we are to keep our sanity and give these kids a chance at a halfway decent life. Anyway, just my take on this film as well as it being entertainment. Definitely a movie for the bigger kids.
