Naturally this is a dramatization and thankfully Mel Gibson didn't have a hand in it so it keeps very close to the historical facts.
Good acting from the cast helped portray what it must have been like for the many who opposed Hitler within Germany and the Werhmacht.
damn tragic!! but at least AH off'd himself months later. it would have been great had the principals been able to successfully stage the coup d'etat - but it would not have been real. i would say the GREAT part of that entire event was that those who were executed -- in their commitment to free germany of the MONSTER and his henchman - became HEROES in their beloved country. hitler, on the other hand, died pathetically, and in infamy..now that's what i call poetic justice!
I can't believe it took me this long to see this film. It was awesomely done, with great actors, and the most beautiful scenery. And a sad movie as well. I really enjoyed it. 5/5 stars
i've been passing on this movie since its release, and now i just watched it i wonder how come it took this long because that was good, i dont think tom cruise has ever made a bad movie, 4/5 from me
okay the first time I tried to watch this I couldn't It was very slow in the beginning but you know I gave it a second time around and I am so glad I did. my heart hurts that they came so close I mean i think we all knew how this was going to end duh but the fact for some reason I thought just maybe I don't know why. I wanted it to happen so very badly. It stuck to what happened though i am happy about that but just what if what if. Those brave men who defended their country not who was trying to run it.. HMM. Seems to hit home for me. I love my country the one leading it well left to be desired. But my country I would die for. I just hope we as America never have to face what the Germans and the jews and everyone had to face then. But with the way my country is going I am afraid we are closer to it than we realize. Especially with who is in office now and who really runs this country slowly taking apart the constitution. Its not a piece of meat that we can cut off and trim the pieces we do not desire and keeping the parts we want and that is what is happing to us now. It has been happening for sometime soon there will be no constitution left to fight for or defend in its place will be what the major corporations want us to follow a new world order and I for one am not about to follow such a tragedy. I will fight and die for my country and constitution if and when the time comes. But for now I pray for another out come this movie has touched me deeply.
I would venture to say that, second to the top 5 religious figures (Buddha, Christ, Mohammad, Moses, Krishna) Hitler is the most well known name on the planet, and will be for hundreds, maybe thousands of years. That is saying a lot. He etched a place in world history like Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great or any other warlord, but in half the time- so terrible were his deeds.
There were 44 known and documented attempts on his life, 15 of those by his own people, and none of them succeeded. It's this kind of story that makes one wonder how much was destiny, and how much was luck..
This movie doesn't say much about that, but it serves to show the world that not all Germans were hypnotized, frightened or forced into joining with the Fuhrer..
A competent historical drama that I will definitely be watching again. 3.5 out of 5.
I really wanted to see this movie when it first came out because the Stauffenberg plot is something that has always interested me, as it was one of the major "near misses" of World War 2. The reason I put off watching this movie for so long is that pretty much everyone I know who had already seen it told me that it was okay-ish without being brilliant.
Screw them! Okay, Bryan Singer will clearly never make another film that reaches the virtuoso heights of "The Usual Suspects", but this is still a captivating and compelling flick.
The excellent cast, the great musical score and the solid screenplay really make this movie a must see flick for fans of historical dramas, war movies and biopics, though it is worth remembering that this is a dramatic adaptation, BASED ON a true story and should not be seen as 100% factual.
not a surprise that this USC grad makes another highly depoliticized film about a rebel who fought to stop the concentration camps. he made his decision to join the resistance when he found out about the SS massacre of jew and gypsies.
