Btw there is a extended edition available, its shows how Sergeant Howie got the letter, few more scenes of Christopher lee, plus some extra rituals performed on the island, but frankly speaking the cut version is awesome, but nevertheless you guys should check out the extended edition, a bit of surprises in waiting.
i have enjoyed this movie every year on may day eve and have done so , so much that i ruined my copy. i watched here this year til i can repurchase a new copy . i seen the nick cage version and severely disappointed as i am a nick cage fan. tsk tsk hollywood i hope a sequel will be much better and will thoroughly enjoy seeing christopher lee return to summerisle.
Nickolas Cage, You Shabby And Disrespectful BASTARD
"Nicholas Cage, you funny-lipped, no side-burns having, constipation-face making, speech-impediment quibbling so-and-so I curse your NAME.."
I watched the remake of 'The Wicker Man' and was convinced that a movie THAT bad had to come from bad stock to begin with. Boy, was I wrong. This 1973 version is something completely different.. completely majical.
The music was the first noteable difference. So passionate--every note, like a celebration of life, death, man, woman, animals, elements of nature--and the bonds that hold it all together..
gott-dammit.. I'm just too pissed to write a proper review. too many questions..
1. Why did they decide to remake THIS movie? Will 'well enough' ever be 'left alone'?
2. Whose decision was it to cast LeeLee (ugly-ass) SOBIESKY for the part of the village squeeze? She can't act, sing or participate in a good sex-scene..
THAT'S ANOTHER THING: the 'sex-scenes' were done with such gentle reverence and grace. And the singing was an absolute enchantment..
3. Why would they remake this movie and include everything EXCEPT what made this movie a classic? The ONLY thing the remake got right was punching LeeLee Sobiesky in the face and burning Nickolas Cage alive with the chickens..
uggh..I'm a little sick right now. To think that the major hollywood cartels have us by the BALLS and by the BRAINS and we keep on watching their productions, hoping to be enlightened..but the studio-lords only allow that to happen twice a year: once in 'drama', once in 'comedy'. Warner Bros should change their name to Warner BLOWS..
The Wicker Man (1973): 10 /10
The Wicker Man (2006?): should be stricken from the damned records..
*crushes Nickolas Cage's testicles with a stone. LeeLee Sobiesky's too..*
lol, 'no side burns having,' love it. That never occurred to me, that guy could really use some sideburns. Agree with just about every word, except I don't feel sick as I was lucky enough to see the original years ago before the remake. I'd be sick if that Cage mess had ruined the ending of the proper one for me.
I am simply stunted, have no words to describe this master piece. The best music i have ever heard, the most fascinating story, with stunting visuals. The combination of music and erotic dance with temptation at the background was a master stroke, now this is a true classic. All the actors played their part with perfection, particularly Edward Woodward, he was great and Christopher Lee, was amazing, calm with sophistication which made his small part immortalized. A must see movie before you die, because you will miss the real meaning of entertainment. For a classic like this there can be no rating, it is truly immortalized and ever green.
P.s. I am really annoyed that why i had not seen this movie before.
This is the only version of this movie as far as I'm concerned. The other didn't happen.
Edward Woodward plays his role to perfection, convinced he is in control of the situation but totally deluded. These are friendly people, they aren't evil psychos but everyday folk. That is how they see themselves, they just have their 'local ways' which outsiders wouldn't understand. That's what makes this movie so creepy and disturbing, and in a unique way.
There's a formula for a genuinely scary movie here which has been lost by the makers of modern horrors.
i've seen the newer and was bored out of my head, i actually thought since Cage was in it i would enjoy it-WRONG! I never knew though there was an orignal..i've read the comments from everyone but still torn about wether to give it try since i hated the first one i saw so much.
I had never heard of this movie ,nor the re-make, and was delighted from beginning to end. A brilliant, brilliant film worthy of the term "Classic" in all respects.
Superb cast and acting, Magnificent scenery, Location and Fantastic story line, script , blended together to create a truly memorable film.
Why bother with a remake when you already have a GEM ?
Hollywood wasn't interested in making a better film..they figured a little modernization would give them a profit! Idiots!
Changing anything would only subtract from the whole ..I suppose, I'll have to now watch the remake to legitimize my remarks..UGH!
a definite 5/5 on all aspects.
Quite rich in lore and openness to the police sergeant. As they said, he came willingly and as a fool. Anyone would have to be a fool to continue in his 'search' for the lost girl with so many blatant clues as to what was going on. Perhaps he lead a sheltered life and could not see.
A good movie, I prefer it to the newer remake with Nicolas Cage. This was much more rich with the countering of beliefs. The shooting in the different locations in this movie is much more beautiful and believable.
I might watch it again in a few years, but for now it is enough.
to see how a remake can be butchered to the point of crossing genres into comedy.this film was garbage, even for its time, but the genius who decided to remake it with one of the greatest hack actors of all time (cage) was unintentionally brilliant as it will be studied for generations as the worst remake of a film that was lame enough not to be made in the first place..
so some pagans throw on some masks and sacrifice someone- i open a newspaper and i'm more scared.
Creepy from the beginning. Excellent overall but threre is two things I just find hard to believe
a virgin cop? And he should have guessed in the classroom when he found out even the kids and the teacher were lying to him concerning Rowan morrison that the whole island was in on it, and immediately radioed for backup.
Classic British horror film, starring the magnificent Sir Christopher Lee, which was once described as "The Citizen Kane of Horror Movies".
Very original storyline (especially for the time in which it was made), perfect setting (filmed in several locations throughout Scotland) and a great ending. 5/5 stars.
According to info on IMDB, a sequel is currently in the works, titled "The Wicker Tree" a.k.a "Cowboys for Christ". Same director and release date is 2010. Christopher Lee is also returning.
very intense, the remake couldn't come close to it..
very unique as horror/thrillers go, i saw this awhile back, an its an impressing story, it really makes u think, with its errie daytime scenes its a very risky storyline but as the plot begins to thicken, ur eyes will be glued to the screen..
there's a very disturbing ending, where while they slow cooking him, he begins to sing, as praying, an meanwhile the sun is setting so beautifully, an down below on the the grass the town people are singing all sweet an hippieish as if its a peace rally rather then a human sacrifice, o man, its such an intense scene, very memorable, an im left after the movie thinking, OMG, how could they do that to him..
