Set in Kansas during the early 1900s, a teen-aged Native American boy (newcomer Winter Fox Frank) is taken from his family and forced to attend a distant Indian "training" school to assimilate into White society.
It was a very moving story that had me aware of many things. As it played out in this setting more of this truly made me feel certain things that are done daily to any culture 'we don't like or want them to be like us' so we have the option to assert our own lives into them. Forcing this notion into the Indians is like we are doing now in Arizona. I rate this movie in high regards in watching one person change. 9.9
The story of the First Nation Peoples is one that needs telling if we are ever to stop repeating the atrocities carried out in the name of "civilization".
This is a great story, well acted throughout, but unfortunately not told all that well in this film.
It is so slow at times without that time lending anything to the film in the way of pathos or empathy.
Great story, not such a great film despite wonderful performances.
7.5/10
i truly appreciated watching.
a wonderful elder was once kind enough to sit and talk with me when
she was finished her lectures at an Elders Conference @ Trent University, canada.
Her name was Shirley Williams and she had been taken and held at a residential school
in canada. Even though she and her fellow children underwent what is best described as
torture, she was a bright light of kindness and decency to all who knew her,
no matter their colour.
Good to see a western style movie as told from more of a Native American perspective. There is little understood or known by the public at large about the different histories of the different nations that originally resided on the American lands and what policies they fell victim to as European descendants took over and institutionalized the land. Most of the policies were put in place not for the benefit of the Natives but for capitalist ventures of white people. It would seem that the self-evident truths were (are) not so self evident. Know the history to gain some perspective on the present.
Really hard and tough, but at the same time complex and subtle. Well acted and filmed. Wes Studi, a genuine Native American, deserves an Oscar for his performance. The plight of the Indian even in the early 20th century seems to have been even worse than that of the Australian aborigine, also often because of the attitude and actions of well-intentioned but self-righteous whites. The references throughout to "Dracula" which the bright indian youth is reading are apposite:
[SPOILER]
the main villain McCoy, evil but haunted by the memory of the atrocities he has committed, is even symbolically given the coup de grāce with blows from a heavy wooden crucifix in a ruined church
There is an obvious tribute to John Ford's "The Searchers", possibly the best western ever made, with a brightly lit doorway viewed from the inside at the beginning and the end, drawing a parallel between the rescue of the white girl from the clutches of "savage redskins", and the rescue of an indian boy from the cruelty and intolerance of a bigoted white society which has abducted him from his home and family. (9/10)
