total crap.. not something i would expect from peter jackson.. there are way better serial killer movies and way better drama movies than this, btw i missed the horror part, where was that ?? it does good in none.. ppl are like sheeps in flocks, one follows the other, just because this movie has got high ratings doesn't mean you have to praise it..
The movie got high ratings because people genuinely liked it..myself included..I have watched loads of serial killer movies and I liked this one because of how different the storyline was to others I have watched and the spiritual side to it..My daughter loved it as well.,.So I don't think it is a case of following like sheep this time around.. IMO
Fascinating crime drama, including awesome cast and Saoirse Ronan did a great job. Stanley Tucci makes the movie powerful, great great acting. Must see, I will give 9/10.
People, People, there is a spoiler button for a reason. I'm glad I didn't read any of the comments before diving right in as I had this pegged on my to see list. Having said that, the film is okay. Like one poster said, the symbolism and imagery get tired for a minute but the story is moving and poignant. I don't know why so many had a problem with the ending, that's about as true to life as you are going to get.

In fact, I think they just threw that over the cliff stuff in there to satisfy the masses. I can't help but think the director toyed with the idea of having him drive away with another victim.

it is definitely a different take on your average serial killer film.
So, for being that I'll give it a 3/5
Edit: Oh yeah, I don't like Sarandon necessarily but she was good.
Ots either you love it or you hate it. You understand it or not. It a werid spooky movie about the meanings of death how we see it when we come to our end. No real sotryline i dont think its anything specail but it is worth a watch.
a truly inspirational, heartfelt, and bone tingling film to see if you to have ever lost a loved one. i give it 4/5. and its totally wrong but true how they say in the film that

its better to move on and be happy about the time that u were able to spend with that loved one than to dwell on the painful fact that your loved someone is..sigh.. never coming back.
this was a very beautiful movie.. good thing i didn't listen to the reviews.. very intense - i found anyhow.. i liked how her sister never gave up especially over that creepy neighbor.. i was hoping a different ending like him being arrested and them finding her body.. but i guess, karma took it's course!!
omgg im sorry but i just have to write this..ive read alot of comments people wrote and im going to attempt to gather them all and comment.

first i was soo bored by this movie there were only 2 or 3 parts where you were at the edge of your seat waiting to see what was about to happen, yet epic fail everytime it got to the climax of the scene. then the whole thing with me thinking that the movie was going to be about her being killed and helping her family find her killer, as thats what the movie preview says. then the whole scene with her in the fort with him, they did that thing where she ecapes, maybe as a chance to throw you off but she didnt escape and the part that pisses me off the most was that we were all looking for a graphic death scene, something at least showwing him raping/killing her,and they didnt even do anything to confirm her being *$&$&# killed. then the whole time you are thinking hes going to be caught by the dad..then the sister! and when the sister gets away from the man, shes runs in the house and then doesnt even *&&$$^$ing show the dad the book. then shes only shows the grandma? at least thats all i saw i skipped through so many boring parts of the freaking movie. so basically you think hes going to get caughtt and he never does so her justice is never really given. then hes like what 80? and tries to hit on that girl and then the "justice" is made by the icicle and then hes falls a pretty grusom death..which was the only satisfiying part of the movie.
what a xxxxx movie..seriously dont waste your time.
After reading all the reviews combined I see no reason to watch. I feel like I already watched it.

I've been told she was raped and killed by a pedophile and there was no justice in the end. Hoping to have the girl he's going to marry be possessed by her, it goes on and on

I think this is an excellent film about the fragility of life and death, and I wasn't at all disappointed by the ending. More often than not these guys do escape justice and I kept expecting he would be arrested but that the book alone was not proof enough (even with the DNA - look at O.J.). The sweet irony amidst this tale of horror - and beauty - is that you can never really escape karma; and the villain didn't. The visuals were quite stunning as well as performances all around. Bravo. 5/5
Fantastic movie, lousy ending. I guess in the whole of things it turned out okay, I would have preferred to see some justice. Life however does not always see justice though. I give this movie 5/5
THE IMAGERY STARTED TO BE ANNOYING AFTER A BIT , BUT THE FILM WASN'T THAT BAD , I REALLY WANTED THE RAPIST KILLER TO BE ARRESTED AT THE END , FALLING OFF THE CLIFF WOULD NEVER HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE SO THE FILM LEFT ME A BIT EMPTY , THE LITTLE
I think this movie was beautiful, the ending was very touching and eliberating. I don't know the reviews on it, but sadly beacuse of its artistic aproach that can't be understood by the majority, it is underrated.
Wow, i could not stop crying, i think this film was really good and i am glad that in the end everythig fell in place and that things happened for the better!
I thought it was a decent movie but like a lot of people wanted to rip my scalp off at the end. Some things I thought didn't make sense drove me a little batty but not a bad film.
I was hyped up for this movie, the preveiws captivated me from day one. The movie was done good, the cast, the special effects, BUT the story was well, crappy! half of it didnt make sense and most of it had me screaming at the screen. AND no i havent read the book and Im sure the book is waay better which really wouldnt be that hard. BUT the movie its self sucks. The ending sucked and

the guy fell off a cliff like what months/years later? I felt no justice for the family..OooO he fell off a cliff so lame!! He should have been caught and her body found! I would have enjoyed this movie much much more had that been the ending!

thats true i didnt like the fact that the victim (had to be the one that forgave in order to move on) reflects too much of the modern law system of jail the victim and not the guy who commited the crime- bring back the death penalty!
The ending turned out bad because Peter Jackson had one ending in mind, the killer getting away, whilst the author had the icicle killing him and Suzie making love to her guy, rather than just a kiss.
So, he had to make a compromise of *not* having suzie shout "I'm in the ducking box", whilst also having justice. Also, the book has her being raped and killed, not just killed.
Overall, I think Jackson had to keep this PG-rated - no blood-gore icicle, no sexual interactions, and so on.
Without the rating issue, I think everybody would of been much happier with the ending.
i agree they should have had made it just like the book like the book decribed what she had to go though and everything so yes the rape scence should have been in here and killing part of him and the sex scence cause its showing how much they loved each other i hope they remake it later and follow the book 100 percent
i disagree i dont think i need to see sex/rape scenes to know they were implied - i tink i much prefrerred that they didnt put that in - not every movie needs that to be a success and i dont think it woulda made a diff to the ending it woulda been the same anyway
I think it was tasteful that they didn't show the rape. They definitely alluded to it when the scene cut to her hands wringing in her laps, and then when he tosses her down. The screen goes dark while he's above her. It screamed domination and fear to me. You already knew it was going to happen when he began to shed the layers of his own clothes and requesting that she do the same.
We were watching the story through her eyes and she didn't want to remember it, so she didn't. And what do the specifics of her death matter when we know how and why she died? The movie was about dealing with the loss. I'm thankful the implication was a little more sophisticated, but it also made the story so much crueler because we didn't know exactly what happened and are left to imagine it on our own.
Everyone wants a happy ending, but life very often doesn't play that way. I, for one, am glad that justice was served in the greater scheme of things rather than the typical criminal-goes-to-jail method. He died as brutally as he had killed others. For that situation, yeah, the case is never going to be closed, but in the big picture karmic justice was served.
Whether the body had been found or not, the family still lost a daughter and would have to find ways to heal and deal with it. I feel that's the biggest theme in the movie. Learning to adapt and move on even with all the pain hanging over you. You set it behind you and look forward, in this life and the next.
