Great acting!! The story was very good, sad ,shocking and very touching, but I had a hard time to understand what Precious was saying sometimes.. but jah great movie and it was worth the watch
Man oh man. I understand the need to get a point across in a story but this was just a little too much for me. It became so sterotypical and overdone about twenty minutes in that me along with the rest of the viewers were calling the shoots about ten minutes before they happened. Now before everyone gets all uppity, the performances were amazing. MoNique was insane. I didn't realize it was her untill almost an hour thru the movie. She just blew me away. However even with that said it just seems like they had to throw every possiable sad and horriable ordeal at this girl. It became almost laughable at times. You would be sitting there thinking to your self "Well S..whats next is she gonna get.." then presto it happened! I liked it but it became played out and boring half way thru for me, sorry..but that's my opinon.
It's great to hear that you are so lucky ( or so sheltered) that you found this story "overdone" & stereotypical", you even went as far as tosay it was laughable..hmm.Well, whenyou live in Pleasantville, maybe it's true thatyou only have a bad day every once in awhile, if some total JERK stole your parking space, or *gasp* Starbucks messedup your coffee order & it threw off your WHOLE DAY..that might make it seem a lil "Hollywood" to YOU when serious things really happen! ( I can't do a spoiler in a reply, & I don't want to give anything away) Unfortunately, that kind of life is often just that- tragic, intense, & riddled with road blocks & mountains to climb carrying the redicule of the world on their backs while people like you snicker at how "unrealistic" that is because YOU CAN'T RELATE! Consider YOURself lucky, because there are too many young girls & women who have walked in Precious shoes..& are still walkin' today, dealing with "everything & a cherry on top"
Unfortunately warrior there are people who cannot relate. they cannot put themselves into the shoes of another and imagine what it would be like. they cannot fathom something like this happening, and if they can, they've seen ti so much it's just ho-hum oh-well. Those of us who have had issues in our lives and overcome, we can relate. For those who have had self esteem issues stemming from rejection and the like can also relate. If you've experienced either and kept your heart and your head up, you can relate. If a movie is all emotional manipulation and no story that's one thing. this movie is not that.
It was sad, depressing, and inspirational at the same time. While I am conflicted in the way black people are portrayed, I think it is a story that needed to be told. (true or not) Unfortunately, some will view this as ALL black people and not just some, or a few. lostboysfan is right about Gabourey Sidibe mumbling a good portion of her lines. However I think that was by design in this case as it punctuated her shyness and the level to which she was withdrawn. (Even some narration) As far as Mo'Nique is concerned, I really didn't like her before this. I didn't like her stand-up or the roles she played. This film made me change my mind a little, particularly her last scene.
[SPOILER]
She portrayed a vulnerability and anguish so deep and profound I was impressed. she made me feel it.
That, imo, is what secured the Oscar for her. I died laughing when
[SPOILER]
Gabourey Sidibe took the bucket of chicken and ran. Also when she slapped the heel out of that girl for calling her fat.
Good movie..Monique's role is most great however the girl playing the Jamaican totally hurt my Country's dialect..we don't always speak like that all the time and pull on our words like that.
Glad For When They Are Made, But Hate They Speak The Truth
A voice for those commonly unheard is one of the things I love about watching movies like this. Can't hardly watch them though. Its as gruesome as watching Saw except you feel more emotionally involved..
I have read the book - the movie has done it justice .. every page I read came to life with this movie .. the gruesome scenes & the inhuman treatment & the determination of her wanting more & a better life after the hell she indured .. 9.5 out of 10.
Monique played her role too well & Gabby was very good - she did bring the character to life.
I was entranced by the way one would do so with her child to gain material things let alone have the child used for other things that the mother wanted. It was a wrenching movie to captivate a truth in how things are for some people in the real world. Pretty cool if you ask me.. 7.5
It was alright. I think everyone hyped it up too much because it was just average. A little boring for me, "Precious" was hard to understand at times and her mom was so annoying that I zoned out whenever she talked. Worth a one time watch, 3/5.
One of the best movies I have seen in years. A true classic. The acting was great, story line was excellent, and very realistic. 5 out of 5 for sure. You should definitely see it! ♥
I was shocked by how unoriginal this story was. The people who will love and be shocked by this movie are people who never even imagined the plight of poverty and being a rape victim. I don't want to sound mean but these aspects make up my favorite books and this one took the basic storyline (which I admit can never really be basic) father raping his daughter, a mother who does nothing, a teacher and social worker who wanted to help. Maybe it's because I'm a surrealist at heart and am always looking for something that's just more .
The acting was great. I found myself wanting more closeups of Precious's face for some reason, I'm probably the only one. The clothes she wore in the movie annoyed me, they just seemed too unrealistic considering her mother was on welfare. Also why the hell did they have to explain away her being fat as an abuse? That really irked me.
Overall, wouldn't have watched it if I had known but better than most of the drivel they regurgitate. Aka if my review sounded familiar to you, there's really nothing new in this movie, and if it sounded awfully sad and amazing in a way, you'll probably watch it and cry and enjoy it.
3/5
it's impossible to make an original, and at the same time realistic movie these days..if it happens on this planet and it is remotely intriguing, it has been most certainly turned into a movie or a book, so after your standards, isn't original..you would have considered it original if she had been raped by the cat, instead of her father, and she would have given birth to kittens, wouldn't you? now that's original..
I agree with you on some points; this was truly a disturbing movie; sad.. the clothing was a little too pricey for a budget of welfare, yeah and you rarely find social workers who care and have the time to put you first..anyway, the acting was really good.. Monique played her evil character(and I say evil because she had not one caring bone in her body) to a tee. Maybe she should stick to being mean as a main character in her movies..that was she won't have to be loud all the time. Not a movie I will see again, but its worth a watch to see why the characters received such deserved spotlight..
Hey Ehm you should've put some of those comments on a spoiler. I just was reading the reviews getting ready to watch this and I wouldve liked to have found out she was abused by her father from the movie, not from you.
I agree with vi empress stx, on everything she said. They really could have done more with the story.. it left me feeling awful. The ending left me hanging with such a wretched feeling. I definitely felt for Precious and her children, it is so awful to see such emotional, sexual, and physical abuse (omg it was heartwrenching) but geez I feel like I've already seen this movie 100 times. I wouldn't watch it again or recommend it to anyone for that matter. 2/5*. Oh btw, Monique did an amazing job! I loved seeing her out of her element. Not one funny moment with her in this role. She really impressed me.
well that was a unique assumtion..i loved this movie and i know first hand the experiences of both being a rape victim and being poverty-striccen. the movie is based off the author's encounters with girls just like Precious so to some extent it's more than just a basic storyline. As for her clothes, yea they're on welfare but yuh can get "pricey" clothes at places like Salvation Army or donations but it's never said where the clothes actually came from
at any rate, this story is more than moving and definitely inspiring
9/10
I agree the story was unoriginal, but also exagerrated too, which made it seem unreal. I expected more. Really. With that said I think the actors did a good job with what they had to work with. Overall, 2/5. The director just did a poor job of telling this story.
AMAZING movie! Absolutely loved it. I was so nervous to watch this movie because a lot of my friends said it was so sad and inspiring. But i got up the courage to watch it and this movie is definately great!
I agree wholeheartedly with you VampyreCountess001. I read the book when it came out years again and the words in black and white were just as powerful as the film. 10/10
We hated it! My man and I just looked at each other and were disappointed.
[SPOILER]
The film was not deep; considering you've already seen the same writing and storyline. Not very much in the way of surprises. Precious' teacher being a lesbian was a relief. That was the only upset/pleasant surprise in the film. A fat turd who doesn't exercise regularly, doesn't make a hasty get away on foot! Stealing the chicken? & hitting the pavement? Not very likely. Of course I cared about the girl's plight, just not that much. Not all grim, down and dirty "ghetto tales" are Oscar worthy.
10/10
Amazing story, powerful acting; really grips your attention and makes you feel what she's felt.
I cried and cried and cried and felt happy for her that she was finally moving up all on her own and that she found happiness/ friendship.
Great acting ! Im glad I saw it but sometimes it lost my attention. Gabourey Sidibe & Mo'Nique did a great job. sometimes it lost my attention so i give it 4 stars. Not really a movie for me. 4/5
It was a really good movie monique played the heck out of her character so gabourey!! It mad u cry at some parts, laugh and cheer because u knew precious was gonna make it!! This is a must see movie for anyone
