Hey, well this is slightly different from the Miyazake movies we may have come to expect but to me this is as good as any of his other films.. it's just slightly different.
This movie is aimed at younger kids, you could show this to a 5 year old child and they'd love it, but as an adult just look at the settings and the story, it's very sophisticated. Consider the story here.. I'm blown away by Miyazake's ability to keep coming up with such inventive and original stories and images.. anyone who's ever tried writing a fairytale or any type of children's story will tell you it's hard to find a really original idea, something that hasn't been done before.. Mr Miyazake seems to do just that with every movie he makes.
Ponyo is kind of like "Finding Nemo.. the Spiritual version!" I mean Wow, think of Alice in Wonderland, the Lewis Carrol Original story, great imagery, classic tale.. then look at ANY of Miyazake's movies and tell me they're less inventive or original. Truly he is a master of imagination, brilliant artwork, superb story-telling.
This film is surely aimed at the younger viewer but it's still very charming for older people too.. It's really good by any set of standards though so, don't be disappointed cos it's not the same as "Howl", just appreciate it cos it's the work of a genius!! Full marks from me.. Love
PS Number 2 here is in English, Divxlink, excellent dubbing by Disney, good quality streaming.. Enjoy!
Pixi, I've read your review and agree. Your take on originality is, well, original. In the olden days, children's tales taught a survival lesson. For example, Little Red Riding Hood was a story about staying out of the forests and away from the wolves. The tale was personified for impact and lesson retention. I wonder what the modern equilivant might be. In those days, wolves were real and their danger real. How might we portray today's dangers to our young?
Thank you for your excellent comments.
An excellent anime from Ghibli. Congratulations to the site. A year ago, I had trouble locating and viewing this film. The site has grown much since. This is a fine little film, but the least I've seen from Ghibli. It is a nice children's tale, but a little shallow for adults. 4/5
Mmm, I enjoyed the cuteness. However, it looks like Miyazaki has gotten a bit lazy on this one. The adventure on this film is nothing compared to Howl's Moving Castle , Spirited Away & Princess Mononoke . These three would absolutely stay with you, keep you entertained, take you on amazing adventures right there where you're sitting (that's how I felt). Unfortunately this one was just stuck. I really hoped Miyazaki would've topped all his masterpieces. He has far yet to do so. Overall rating-- 3.1/4
wow,I'm just stunned by how great this animation cartoon is,this movie had my full attention span throughout the whole show,it was great and inspirational a well done cartoon,I'm trying to use some good words to describe this movie but for now that's the best i can do.this is a watch for all ages and i will watch this one again with my grandson,5/5 top of the line
I've always enjoyed his movies, this one wasnt a let down at all. I also love the ones with the cute little love story put in, one that isnt drastically over done. I think the best part is that it always feels original and something refreshing to watch, especially with all the creatures and words he puts into his films.
This is my third time seeing this movie (second in Japanese), and I can't even begin to describe how much I love it. It's so rare to find such a finely crafted children's movie these days. I am going to miss Miyazaki so much.
