THIS MOVIE BLOWS HARD, if ur watching it cause its a war movie,,don't bother,,its a piece of .., ,corny --------, love story movie,,hated it,,comparing this to band of brother or saving private ryan would be a insult!, though i'm canadian, this canadian should die..sucks ass..hate antiwar films..

I think otherwise, it was a good war movie with a different view. Unlike following the expected plot of other such war movies, it shows us what it was like at home.
Without the "love story" this film would be souless
Hate anti-war films? Here's an idea..join up and experience it yourself then let's see what your view is. Maybe you're too young to join up yet? Sounds like it..
One of the very few WW1 movies out there and I actually enjoyed the fight scenes. I couldn't quite get into the story line part of the movie though :P lol.
It may not, as an ealier poster pointed out, be the equal of "All Quiet on the Western Front" or "Paths of Glory", but it was quite well done, and very moving. The vaguely similar but dreadful. vainglorious "Legends of the Fall" also involving WW I with Brad Pitt and Anthony Hopkins was a total absurdity in comparison.
Commonwealth casualties in both major world conflicts were greatly disproportianate in terms of their populations, but it seems that this was partly due to their keenness and fighting spirit, and not just the tendency of the British Generals to say "We'll take no risks: you go first!".
hard to find world war 1 movies, but when you do its always inter-mixed with a love story, why is that? world war 1 was a meat grinder, and was the worst of the worst, to be fighting in, every horror imaginable, yet they always make it a love story when its a world war 1 movie. lost battalion is by far more like it was in war. i give this 3/5 stars only because it saves itself with a halfway descent battle scene at the end.
Excellent movie, showed the Canadians important in the first World War. Much of the movie was taken up by romance in the homeland but at the end of the movie you'll expect a great battle.
Wow what an excellent movie this was actually the first WW1 i have ever seen and boy was it good. Im Canadian, but i just learned something about our great country i never knew before. Next American that makes fun of our military is getting a knuckle sandwich .
..sometimes I feel like a motherless child ,sometimes I am alone like a character in an Edward Hopper's painting..is THE GREAT WAR so far away that we have forgotten what it meant ?? After hundreds of senseless hollywood war movies where the true meaning of melodrama is unfortunately missing and the brainless violence reigns supreme, this pearl of a film by Paul Gross reminds us of what values were all about and the lack of them in war..well acted, written and directed (also sound tracked )this is a little masterpiece from Canada..10/10.
Hard movie to talk about. I couldn't quite decide if this was a film about love in a war or about war where the characters are in love. Ultimately, I think the film failed because it couldn't quite decide either. There were moments of great acting and moments of great war. There were also a few overly melodramatic moments, and there were some very slow moments. For me, it just never developed the spark that carries me and becomes a great movie. 2/5
Hey------------------, read my comment again, war is the background, this is a film about compassion in a war. The story is about the Passchendaele battle yes, AND Paul Gross tells the true story handed down by the participants, this is their story. I agree as to the melodramatic moments, like stopping the battle in respect after hanging the kid up (hollywoodism for sure)! For me, and judging by most other viewers comments, the story and spark are above reproach, as in the undemanding love between the main characters and the heroism in the face of desolation.

Sorry to offend. You may also want to watch the all-time classic about WWI, All Quiet on the Western Front. I think I'd also recommend A Long Engagement for a look at the non-combatant side. Finally, there is always Kirk Douglas in Paths of Glory. This movie just didn't come up to the mark for me.
Good movie, impressive realistic WW1 battle scenes probably the best ever portrayed on film, the romance aspect was played down yet at times possibly got in the way usually at the wrong time so it didn't feel like a romantic film.
Great acting throughout and great to see fantastic reality in the battle scenes but there was just that something special lacking that left me feeling unfullfilled but I could not put my finger on it.
Good movie to watch, good movie to make your kids watch as a history lesson on WW1.

I disagree with the negative comments. It is based on a true story. So rather you like it or not, the facts are the facts. You cant change history. Sorry bud.
I've been a Paul Gross fan since he played in the t.v. series "The Mounty". I'm realy impressed with his writing, producing abilities and his acting is better than ever in my book. I'm glad to see he's still around and doing quality projects such as this. I really enjoyed the W.W.I. battle reenactments. Well done. I was even able to put up with the love story. Worth watching for sure.
i was just wondering where you are from, because up here in Canada where the series was shot, his show was called "Due South"
maybe they changed the name for an american audience?
Get your popcorn and drink because you ain't moving for two hours. War is the background for an truly incredible story of heroism, ignorance and love. If this true account does not both leave you cringing at the horror and uplifted by the dedication to humanity then you are pretty much brain dead. This is the best depiction of trench warfare in WWI I have seen, but it is much more than that, it is a visual masterpiece with exceptional acting. Eat your heart out Hanks. 11/10
I can understand why adults are giving 10/10's and 5/5's.
I think it was a very inspiring and well made film
But as im 15 .. for a teenager , i would give this film about an 8/10 for it was a bit slow starting and not THAT much action for a war film. But thats just on a teenagers point of view. Ofcoure an adults would be different.
this movie had it's moments . i think it could of focused a little more on the war parts but the real sad part is they took that town for not,if you read at the end it says that the germans recaptured the town the next summer ,what a waste of a lot of good men,
Well I lived in Calgary for 20 years and if there was a place like that I would have stayed longer - LOL.
Outside of the city there are nice spots to visit.
Good movie and the romance was not that much overkill, I have seen worse.
