I can't bring myself to call it a movie. The idea was that there should've been twenty short films representing the twenty arrondissements of Paris (eventually two shorts were not included). So it's 18 shorts made by different directors. It doesn't matter that they have the common idea, I still call it an anthology of shorts, not a movie. For the same reason I'd really prefer to rate each one separately. Some movies were bleak and stupid. Some had good idea but it didn't really work out in my opinion. Some I simply didn't like. The only movie that made a stunning impression on me was Gus Van Sant's "Le Marais". It's an awesome, awesome short that lasts only 10 minutes but tells everything it needs to tell. Fell in love with this movie
I also liked the idea of "Loin du 16e", so sad and so true. I wasn't stunned by this movie, but it did leave a strong impression. I work as a teacher and every time I can't play with my kids coz I have to go to work to teach somebody else's I think about this film.
INSTERESTING RAMDOM OF CROSSED DESTINIES MADE BY DIFFERENT DIRECTORS FOR EACH PART, AND YOU CAN EASILY FEEL THEIR DIFFERENT TECHNIC!!
REALLY REALLY RICH!!
AND THE CAST IS JUST AMASING!! THEY DID AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE AND THAT MADE THIS MOVIE EVEN RICHER!!
YOU CANNOT IMAGINE HOW MUCH I CANNOT WAIT FOR " NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU" IT SHOULD BE AWESOME!!
Its nicely done (no wonder, with the names behind it). But don't expect any big thoughts in this, just a few short stories about love, clichés and the well-tried human drama. And don't let them fool you, theres nothing romantic about Paris. Just a city, full of filth and angry sociopaths.
I found this movie really interesting. Even though it's mostly in French (which I don't really understand) it is definitely worth watching because the main "actor" are the different neighbourhoods of Paris with its very different population, cultures, social structures, languages.. (which is more or less the structure of any western metropolis). The film consists of 18 sections made by 18 different directors about 18 arrondissements (of which there are in fact 20 in Paris). So there is no coherent storyline - only fragments. But I think that this is the best (maybe the only) way to portrait the complexity of life in a huge western city. If you expect a blockbuster with much action, explosions and all this stuff, you'll be disappointed. The movie is more like what in Germany is called "Programmkino". It's for a sophisticated audience that is culturally interested..
This movie is wonderful but maybe not for everyones taste.
If you like everything in the movie to intertwine and you need each scene to be the continuance of the one before, you will not like this movie..however if you're into good cinema and have an open mind this is the movie for you.
