Tommy Lee Jones, as ever, plays Tommy Lee Jones - which is no bad thing, he always brings something over and above to a movie.
Good storytelling but the ending wasn't in the same class as the rest of the film .. in fact it was almost a different film.
Really wanted to give it more but at 7.5/10 it's still better than average.
This film is easily one of the best of the decade. In two words, subtley blinding. Everything from the cinematography, to the sparsley worded script, to the brilliant sound editing. Each time the Choen brothers direct a film, I am consistently overwhelmed. 5/5 no question.
you just dont know what life is going to throw at you.you can be driving somewhere at the wrong place and time and get killed for your car.you can be a killer, driving somewhere at the wrong place, and time, and get killed,or almost killed, his journey may continue till he runs out of coins or hit by a train
This movie is vintage Coen Brothers. It has great dialogue, cinematography and a storyline that really makes you ask yourself some moral questions. In the end you are not left with the same cookie cutter result that most directors leave you with were everything works out and you can have closure to the situation. Instead it leaves you with a lot of questions and only you can answer them. I think that the Coen's strongest virtue is their ability to turn a movie into a piece of art. Like most art, the artist doesn't tell you what the masterpiece means. It's up to you to decide what it means to yourself.
This is, rarely for the Coens, an adaptation and the ending is completely faithful to the one in the book. A lot of people are critical of the ending, and that's understandable, but really it summed up what the movie was trying to say. Jones's narration is leading up to it from the start,
the world is full of people who do terrible things, and many just walk away from them. That's life, people don't always get their comeuppance. I think the realism and the fact that it didn't have your standard predictable 'showdown' ending is partly what earnt it so many accolades.
Javier Bardem is just an inspired piece of casting. Thoroughly deserved his Oscar for an incredible and genuinely unnerving performance.
