Nelson Mandela, in his first term as the South African President, initiates a unique venture to unite the apartheid-torn land: enlist the national rugby team on a mission to win the 1995 Rugby World Cup.
Truly amazing and very inspirational movie.. I found myself cheering at the end - as if I was right there! :)
I love Matt Damon, love Morgan Freeman, and although I never really liked Clint Eastwood, I am starting to admire him as well! All three did a terrific job, as always!
A Great Movie, Eastwood goes from great to better with every film he makes and Morgan Freeman stands out as superb with every new role,
A true inspirational story with simple lessons when applied to every day life would make us all better members of the human race.
Definately a 9.5/10
One need not be a Rugby fan to enjoy this true tale, a tall tale which tells of Mandela's humanity and a nations struggle with racism in a time of political upheaval in South Africa. Kept my interest throughout, but I think you must have a deep appreciation of historical events as do I in order to be captivated, otherwise, this is just another over the top sport flick. Only way to be sure is to watch, you can't win the lottery unless you play! For me a 8.5/10.
Like it how Morgan Freeman always plays intelligent people in the movies. The story was ok, and it has some great action as well as Matt Damon makes it an upper by playing the important role. Lets say its worth watching.
not so great movie because clint didn't manage to build up the interest in the event and also all seemed too much sugary to be true when in fact during those years the country was still in the midst of strong racial tensions..Hollywood reigns supreme! 3/5
If you really think that, you have completely missed the point.
South Africa in 1995 was 95% for sure going into Civil War. Mandela did the impossible and united the two nations by building up an enthusiasm about the upcoming rugby world cup.
This ain't no sports movie, this is a film about a political genius that was able to keep his wish for revenge in back and instead gave an open hand towards the white people. Despite it was them to hold him in prison for nearly 30 years.
Much better than I thought it would be. One of those movies your glad you took the time to watch it once it's over. Morgan Freeman was excellent as Mandela. I like Matt Damon over all but his role in this was just so so.
Nelson M is a hero of the modern times and for all the suffering he went through for his fellow African people made him all the more lovable to the world. A man worthy of the world's salute of respect.
This movie was about Nelson bringing together his torn nation with rugby and the national team as the "buffer" for the separated country. It was touching to see the effort Mendela put into making their victory against NZ a reality worth talking about even after more than 10 years. It was Africa finally coming into its own and being noticed by the world for who they are. For rugby fans, this was a known fact in the sports history. However, for non-sports fans, this was probable something new. Therefore, it was a little disappointing not to have been shown IN DEPTH why the events leading to why Mendela used rugby as a political buffer. Also, it didn't really build up the momentum leading the smashing rugby win against NZ whereby how the team really bonded with the people and uniting them in the process. In my opinion, it ended quite abruptly.
But that said, surprisingly, eventhough it was too abrupt for me, Freeman and Damon managed to capture the essence of their respective roles very well indeed in the short time that they did have. My only desire would have been for them to concentrate a bit more on Mendela in his struggles to get to where he was at that juncture so as to be able to rein in the emotions even better. I dunno if I'm making sense but it's just my own humble opinion.
I still give this movie a 9/10 and say with strong conviction that this movie is worth the watch.
Freeman is a genius and no matter what role he undertakes, he becomes the character and is so convincing that in this case, you are so convinced that he was the real thing. Brilliant acting skills. He is a rare artiste and shd be revered for his contribution to Hollywood thus far.
Damon is a star in his own league and every role he takes on seems to make him grow even more, hence lending him the awed title of a great actor.
Clint E is a very unique director. His movies touch a chord in you that you never knew you even possessed in the first place. His last movie "Gran Torino" was an immensely emotional movie and tear jerker. I rmbr all the emotions I was feeling, even now, so vividly like I'm still watching the movie. It takes a damn talented director to be able to evoke such raw emotions from a human being and Clint E is definitely one of the chart toppers in this era.
This is a great movie that I'm sure will win many Academy Awards.. Morgan Freeman gave an excellent performance as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon does another great job.. This movie is more than a Sports movie, more than a Biography, more than a Historical movie, this is an Inspiring movie.. Invictus isn't a movie for everyone but if you appreciate movies of Inspiration then you will love this.. 5/5..
after reading the reviews,i was expecting something close to perfection..i gotta be honest here,no where near a good as people were making this movie out to be..not that it was bad, because it wasent bad at all,but it did seem to drag on on..its worth a watch for sure, just lower your expectations before watching it
7/10 ..btw freeman did a great job as mandela,to bad i cant say the same about matt damon performance.......
I'm not much into sport, but I'll have to admit most of the movie, I saw it sitting on the edge of my seat Morgan Freeman played Nelson Mandela brilliantly.
It's amazing how sports can unite a nation torn apart by racial violence. Nelson orchestrated the whole event, and won. All of South Africa was the winner in this match against New Zealand. Great Movie. 9/10.
i have to say in the days of cgi and specail effects you would think someone like eastwood who just takes a good script and makes a amazing movie out of it would not be able to do well but he does it again and again million doller baby grand tarinio and now this all are oscar worthy films in my mind eastwood is maybe the best director out there right now morgan freeman does a amazing acting job he really looked the part the 1st 45 min was a lil boring but still a very good movie the only problem i would have with the movie is even though matt damon did a good acting job his acceint or lack there of really sucked but besides that a great movie and must see for all movie fans 8.75 stars out of 10
I like the combo of morgan freeman and matt damon.. they played both parts real well.. if you like the underdog-come from behind win-sports movies youll enjoy this one.. although this one is set against the backdrop of south africa apartheid.. ill probably buy this one
It's time to ask the question seriously, "Is Clint Eastwood the greatest film director of all time?"
He approaches film-making with an integrity like no other; every single one of his movies are moral parables in some way. His technique is flawless. His subject matter is always pertinent and told from a poignant point of view. I think he sees film making as a noble choice, a way he can actually change the world for the better. Does any other film-maker compare?
Invictus : 9/10
Morgan freeman 100/10 (this was the role he waited his whole life for, clearly his greatest perfomance)
Matt Damon 9/10
Eastwood is a good director, but personally I definitely wouldn't say the best of all time. I wouldn't say he has 'integrity like no other' either. Sir Richard Attenborough has movies such as Gandhi and Cry Freedom under his belt for example. Movies like Firefox, Sudden Impact, The Eiger Sanction, The Rookie or Heartbreak Ridge aren't what I'd call 'moral parables'.
hmm, i haven't seen Firefox yet! Thanks for the heads up! forgot his name was on that one.
Attenborough is a contender in my books too. But I would go back to those other films you mentioned, especially the Rookie, Sudden Impact, and Heartbreak Ridge. There are lessons taught in those movies, maybe not to the degree of Million Dollar Baby, but still, you can see how the director makes ALL of his films about more than the storyline.
who else competes with Eastwood... help me out guys, I'm really trying to figure this out.
I guess I'd go along with that. I'd still say they're far from moral parables but he does usually have some kind of underlying message. Certainly he has made some very worthy movies more recently and, although he hasn't so far, I'm hoping he won't fall into the trap of becoming too preachy.
EDIT: Who compares with him? I suppose that would come down to personal preference. I love nearly every Coen brothers movie, but I can't think of anyone better than Martin Scorsese. Goodfellas and The Departed are two of the best films I can think of, but then you've got Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Gangs Of New York, Casino, Cape Fear and The Aviator to name a few. As impressive as it is, I don't really think Eastwood's back catalogue can compete with those.
