..very badly done period BBC film not believable in its implications as a pre WWII
plotting story mixing Ealing Studios hollowed techniques with TV movie understatements ..to compare watch the Remains of the day..2/5
Once again the British film industry beats the Yanks multibillion dollar hype mills hands down. I thought it was a fantastic film. It was not a shoot em up bang bang flick. It is a movie for people who want t know what the homelife before the war and told from a completely different perspective..Great acting,great script, superb artists throughout. The ending caught me completely off guard. I give it a 5 on a 5 scale..BTW I got on all of my mapping software and tried to find the ruins of the old castle near the mansion on the estate the film was shot on. I hope it was not a generated graphic...Does anyone know where the location of that set is???
Nothing nefarious about this film,as its very Glossy in a high brow English manner!
The understanding of the Class structure within the back drop of this era helps with the storyline,however I must say that it is both long and slow in style and production values!
Nothing special about this film.
I usually like these type of movies,but this was more of a mystery than anything else although it takes place at the begining of the war there are no war scenes,good acting, more of a woman's movie. 3/5
Engaging but not glorious work. An interesting story slant and well worth a watch. I would have liked to have seen a stronger ending but everything else was so good and the acting excellent. In real terms I felt so very sorry for the poor pets. Much worse than this happened in wars but animals are usually not remembered as casualities.
British movie makers have done it again. This is a marvellous, thrilling, and
at times terrifying film. To be caught up in such a vortex of time-changing
events, and to lose direction and support must be the worst of feelings.
I recommend this film to anyone who wishes to be drawn into a plot with such undercurrents that it will leave you dazed.
What a wonderful period film produced by the BBC; cast around the WWII era!
If you enjoy, WWII movies that are "social epic-like" as those of PBS classic films of the 19th Century and are froth with mystery, sadness and betrayal with a silver lining? this is a film for you.
No war sequence here, much like the movie "Seraphine" a true story by the way and worthy of watching, but a theatrical drama of political ploys of war among and against the commonwealth on the home front.
The ploy includes dire consequences for those who stand against convention of nobility of the old world. The world was changing.. and novelty of "war-speaking" was dealth with by a iron fist of the arch social cast.
This is a thinking film, frame around family matters, betrayal and the driving force of the coming global conflict stirred by Hitlers' revenge and dreams of a perfect society of blue eyed supremacy.
How well do you know your family..how well can you entrust "your" wellbeing with them?
