i highly recommend watching "The Conversation" (1974) also with Gene Hackman in it. It deals with some very similar themes and Gene Hackman plays an almost identical character (right down to the equipment in the cage). Watch "The Conversation" and understand it as an historically significant piece of cinema and THEN watch "Enemy of the State" and perhaps you will suspect how much "Enemy of the State" took from "The Conversation". "The Conversation" is simply a classic and "Enemy of the State" is good but with all of its sensationalism and redone themes it could never reach the status of being a classic of any type. As Maury Finkle would say "Do it, Do it".
Will Smith plays Robert Dean, a successful Washington, D.C. attorney who is passed a tape by an old friend (Jason Lee) on the run; it turns out that the tape secretly recorded a politically motivated murder and now the psychos who committed the crime start methodically ruining Dean's life in an effort to discredit him should he come forward with the evidence. Dean is ultimately forced to team up with Brill (Gene Hackman), a lone-wolf operative who's helped him with some of his cases in the past.
This was fantastic! 10/10!! If you ave never seen it, watch it! If its been a while since you seen it, Watch it! The acting in this was excellent, and the story was way to realistic.. Scary to think that technology was this advanced back then. Imagine what it is today..
One of my favorite action movies of all time. From start to end this movie keeps you captivated. Will Smith is phenomenal in this movie, If you haven't seen this yet please do.
This is though-provoking movie about civil liberties. Where do you draw the line between law enforcement and invading other people's privacy? After the 9/11 events, the line grew even thinner. It's almost non existent. Great performance by Will Smith, Gene Hackman and Jon Voight. This picture is so good, I'm going to buy it an keep it for my private collection.
I still don't buy Smith as an attorney here maybe it's the script or i don't know what but the rest of the movie is passable action fare delivered by the once great Tony Scott.
I watched this film a year ago and i didnt realise it was this old i thought it was 2 years old at max..Intense film superb acting from will smith cant get much better 9.5/10..
fast paced film with a great plot. no oscar winning performances here but thats only because its so story driven rather than character driven, all the actors do what they need to do.
