Effi Briest, An Early, Rather Ingenuous Women's Libber
[Theodor Fontane's "Effi Briest" is the German counterpart of the Russian "Anna Karenina", the French "Madame Bovary", and the English "Forsythe Saga". The female protagonists of all these novels defy the resrictive conventions of the society in which they live, and suffer downfall and possibly death in consequence. The Film has been harshly criticised mainly because many details and themes in the original story have been omitted (which at least to me would seem to be unavoidable), and also because the ending has been rewritten, which I firmly believe nobody would dare to do with the other stories mentioned above. Well anyway, I enjoyed it very much.] 9/10
This movie was so so by me. Just that it reminds me more of "The French Lieutenant's Woman" and that movie between the late Christoffer (sorry for the misspell) Reeves and Lesley Ann Down. Austen? Naah. It has a different feel. Austen has a more positive family feel. This one starts with that of incoming doom and enlightenment from cest' la vie. Just my thoughts..
I attempted to view this film, however, their is missing scenes between Part 1 & Part 2, and a lot after Part 2 is not there. What I did see was interesting, entirely spoken in Russian (assumption) with English subtitles. If it was complete I'd give it a 3/5.
This movie is in German an no vital parts are missing. This movie is the 1894 novel by German novelist Theodor Fontane.Effi Briest is widely considered to be Theodor Fontane’s masterpiece and one of the most famous German realist novels of all time.
