Based on the world best-selling book 'Desert Flower' by Waris Dirie - the autobiography of a Somalian nomad circumcised at the age of five, sold in marriage at age 13, who became an American supermodel and is now, at the age of 38, the UN spokeswoman against circumcision.
This movie brought tears to my eyes.. there is no words to explain how I feel after watching this movie.
This movie deserves every award in the book because for once its a movie about something real, something terrifying and wrong.
My God this movie has proven how INSANE human beings really are.
This was such a well done movie, and brings light to a most evil practice of mutilation against woman! But the courage of this woman to speak out, and try to change the lies of far too many years that has destroyed so many is awe inspiring! The acting was wonderful, and brought smiles as well as tears to me through out! A must see, and going on my play list with a 5/5 hands down!
The world ALLOWING ritualistic sexist tradition to desecrate bodies and spirit is to spit in God's eye. 3000 years? THREE THOUSAND YEARS?!
And still--STILL!!-- it continues. Silence has been considered "politic" and this abominable "tradition" has been ignored for a reason. All the while the reprehensible greed of our supposed "civilized" world's robber barons are milking the African continent of oil and precious metals and gems. They maintain the status quo by perpetuating chaos, by turns filling the pockets of puppet "leaders" who rise and fall, each garnering millions and millions of dollars before they are in turn replaced by bloody coups d'etat.
The sound of tiny girl babies wailing in terror and pain and torment is ignored by the world.. Precious gems continue to be mined, spilling into our country to be worn by -- US! --WE still buy the gold and jewels ..consume the oil in our cars..and the more elite among us watch their fortunes grow..
IN ignorance we are wearing and consuming ..babies' blood dripping from our wrists and fingers..
And still..the silence is deafening, the eye turned away..a little Madison Avenue sleight of hand, a bit of misdirection, and we admire the shiny baubles and give them our money..
"Desert Flower" should be broadcast worldwide on television--broadcast megacorporations that have THEIR fingers in the pot too, have been vigilant in this cover up, should be FORCED to air this again and again to shatter the political collusion that EVEN NOW allows these children and women to be mutilated.. women duped to sustain the "purity" of the marriage bed and the "sanctity" of marriage..this "tradition" being preserved and even PERPETUATED by women themselves in their ignorance, in their own fear as the abused becoming the abusers..
Will the sheep ever look up? Any of us?
FGM has to be top of the list for crimes against humanity..it's a very hush subject when in reality should be brought to the surface .. this film is fantastically beautiful, well acted.. I cried through a lot of the film .. a must watch for everyone
i have just stumbled unexpectedly across this movie
i soo enjoyed it
it has a story and a true one at that
what a woman
all the little things that we humans spend soo much time worrying about
well say no more
waris ur a doll
well acted also
This movie is a MUST SEE for every human being on the planet. We must pay attention and take the steps to stop such horrific and barbaric treatment of women on this earth.. treatment that still happens today.
The strength of these women who have had to endure such terror and butchery is nothing short of incredible, that is, those that survive. Please watch this movie and help to educate yourself in the plights of women across the world.
instead of saying the plights of women or children..or jews christians buddists tibetans gay straight or gree why cant people focus on helping all people with a united effort on massive government pledges to make sure that all country's adhere to the human rights and slave labour laws.
The acting was very good and the story was very touching. I just can't wrap my head around how many girls go through this and how the parent's reasoning comes about. I understand tradition but..damn..All in all this was a great movie. Needs english subtitles cause I'm curious about what ol boy said in the hospital.
This movie made me cry so bad on one part near the end. This is a movie about hardship, courage, dedication, and the strength to prevail against all odds. Due to the fact that this is a true story only adds more emotion. I was inspired and deeply touched by this amazing film.10/10 Bravo
