I don't know if I would classify this as horror. War/drama/thriller maybe, but not horror, despite the bloody war and execution scenes. Overall, the movie was okay. Nothing to write home about. I'll give it 3 out of 5 stars . Drags every now and again, but good to watch once.
I've been to Romania a few times and most there do consider him a hero, even if his legend has become a bit of a tourist trap there ("Dracula slept here!"). Great atmospheric and quasi-historical account, much of it in agreement with the tales I've heard from Romanians themselves (the golden goblet, the Turks' turbans, the feast for the nobles, etc.), and it also strives to show you how the myth of the vampire came from a combination of facts and gossip about Vlad Tepes. Well worth watching. It IS a bit "Hollywood", as others have pointed out, but if you read the names in the opening credits you'll see that Romanians had a heavy hand in the production.
Interesting, attracting attention on the historical subject that generated a rather dark myth, popular even in our times. I recommend to watch The Countess, also based on a true story, same region.
After watching, I went back to read what others have posted and many say this is the actual true story, one posted being from Transilvania in Romania. I was awed by the story, and since it seems to be factual, I am awed to learn that there is truth to the story we have all heard since our childhood. If this were but a fable, it is still a great story and well done movie. Sad about Vlad, and the church, since he fought oppression in his own country as anyone would. 9/10
I haven't seen this movie yet but heard years ago that vlad was real and was the bloodiest count around. That combined with other legends, the way he is viewed today was given birth.
Spfletc I hate to contradict you but there is a illness out there just like vampires. A genetic mutation that causes the person to crave blood and eat raw meat or under cooked meat.
AMAZING! At least this one resembles the truth of who Dracula was. I love all vampire movies of course, but it's nice to see movies setting the record straight from time to time.. A MUST watch if you like history, or well, why not, vampires :P

#1 Vlad tepes rulled over Romania 3 times not 2 times.
#1st rule was possible with the aid of the turks, the second one with the aid of Iancu de Hunedoara(prince of Transilvania who some believed killed Vlad's father) and the third with the help of Hungary.
# his body was never found, true. but there are records of his head alone being delivered to the Sultan to his death. Theories do exist as unknown nobleman bodies have been found in the Snagov monastery dating from that time and a pagan altar containg animal bones.
This movie/documentary is off the chain, I loved it!! I dislike that priest, I dislike his brother, I dislike his father inlaw and his wife was amazingly annoying. I loved Vlad and Bruno, Bruno with your ugly teeth you ROCK!! Any ruler would love to a someone as loyal as Bruno. Funny how people have not changed over the centuries, still ungrateful, still doing evil in the name of christ and still betraying the very entity trying to win them freedom and a better way of life. Aside for the vampire inclusion which I am still not convinced of, Vlad is a hero and they should have name a city after him.. The city of Vlad. He would have done more and much better if he had a less week and unsupportive wife..
Utterly Fantastic Film. This is strictly a story driven movie. It reached a point that I no longer felt as if I were watching this on screen, I was completely enveloped in this telling of Vlad Dracula.
What is fascinating are the politics of the situation and that he learned his cruelty from elsewhere as "the way of the world". Mostly he was a nationalist for his countrymen and denounced the moneychangers much like Christ did; he just didn't have the temperment.
his beheavior was extreme even for his day but this was not just another chapter of the crusades it was something older. more than just islam against christian, it was also greek against persian. the wounds run deep, even before king lionides and the 300. as long as we have sectarian beliefs there will be war.
Great movie!! The acting was great too..i love movies with a good story content (true or not) great acting and gives u the sense of time standing still!
