During China's Tang dynasty the emperor has taken the princess of a neighboring province as wife. She has borne him two sons and raised his eldest. Now his control over his dominion is complete, including the royal family itself.
I've heard great things about this movie but I can't enjoy it if I can't follow the story. I don't speak Chinese and I can't read Russian subs. Can someone kindly post an American subbed version.
The first question arised in my mind as I was watching the movie was " How much money must have the producers spent on this movie", seeing it's extravagance
No wonder this movie is China's most expensive movie.
No wonder this movie was choosen for an Oscar for the Best Foreign Film.
No wonder this movie was choosen for nomination for Costume design.
No wonder Gong Li is considered China's MOST Beautiful Woman 2006.
Story was full of twists and secrets.
The people I expected to be dead are alive & those expected to be alive are dead.
Tragedy strikes in unexpected places.
The ending was tragic.
This was a drama masterpiece, there was so much going on that you may have to stop it just to see if you have kept up. It was more than I expected. I never heard of this movie and only watched it because of the reviews given here, I wasnt dissapointed. There were so many stories going on at once it was a liittle hard to keep up, but it turned out to be a masterpiece.
Wow. Just wow.
Like everyone else said: this movie's settings and wardrobe make a beautiful moving picture. Even in other Chinese movies/dramas I've seen, the clothes and backdrop don't look this pretty. The camera angles capture everything nicely and truly shows the beauty and abundance of everything as well as how luxuriously the royal family lived.
The acting was pretty good. I loved how the characters were all distinct and special in their own way. The empress was really cool~ I felt really sorry for her throughout the whole movie.
I do admit though, the characters were kind of.. eh. Their personalities didn't really match the nice scenery. Especially the emperor. He was scary. Insane, really.
i don't see how anyone who actually paid attention would think this masterpiece was a waist of time. it had something 4 any and everyone. drama check, action check, romance check. back stabbing, revenge you name it this powerful film had it all!! not to mention it was visually stunning, the colors were breath taking!! a powerful story, it gets 5 stars all day !!
The action was only at the end.Wanted more. The story was too hard to understand,requires more attention than other movies. my rating 3/5. i will not recommend.
this movie is so beautifull, the scenes are art in themselves its a wonderfull movie even if u dont enjoy the story the eyes will have pleasure with each second, great camera work, well done :D

I don't really know how historically correct it is, but it is intriguing and held my attention the whole time. Where some may complain of slowness, I found time to enjoy the intricate attention to detail of the art and grace of the royal court.

It does seem reminiscent of Shakespeare's Hamlet, but it was even more entertaining in it's grandeur.
Beautiful film; a wonderful feast for the eyes. Very powerful and intense storyline, and impressive acting; Chow Yun-Fat was awesome as the Emperor.
I didn't expect anything less from Yimou Zhang; afterall, he is the director of the fantastic films "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers".

royal intregue on the grandest scale, a shocking story and overwhelming visuals. i've never seen chow young fat play such a role. 5/5
those colors, i've never seen those combinations before.
nowt special to write home about after reading the overated reviews. pop-ups kept appearing all through the film and it was also blurry. i will add that if your looking for summot to put you to sleep then watch this as the 1st 90 mins is boring.

..its the first thing that's going to cross your mind when you start the movie..very dramatic but then again it was based on a play..great movie but i never like dialogue in asian cinema..it's too boring for me at times..
