Strong religious themes throughout the film, but if you can get past that its very entertaining. I'd buy this on DVD despite my disagreements with the religious side of the movie. 5/5
I have to say, I don't get your comment about the religious aspect, makes no sense. What is it you "disagree" on? Of COURSE there are strong religious themes - the full title of the book is "Ben Hur: A Tale of the Christ." Check out the history of the book and its author. I'm a bible believer and not fond of religious fiction, don't need it, no way to improve on the bible. I will say I enjoyed the movie with Charlton Heston because it had a majesty and respect to it and the music was superb, which you sure can't say about this version.
please keep in mind, this is a tv miniseries. that being said it was okay, the acting mediocre at best , the transition from boy to man was laughable, the women less than exotic erotic and or extraordinarily beautiful as they were supposed to be. If you have a lot of time to burn its okay, as for my opinion, watch the one with charlton heston, its the best and its on here too. look it up.. man this site is awesome. watch the new, watch the old, I love the internet.
No terrible idea.. good way to reck a classic.. not even gunna waste my time watching this, i'll stick with the original. There are a few classic's that should NEVER be touched, and this is one of em. the one with the idea to start this, needs a smack.
I have to agree with ghost339. I wish someone could finally decide that ripping off the titles of great films and having your way with it does not make it original in any way. Whatever happened to imagination and new stories?

I wasn't going to comment or even log in at all, but your choice of words inspired my response.
I hope you are forgiven one day by the movie gods. The sentence, "I highly doubt the "classic" was better." shows your true ignorance. The original Ben Hur is a famous work of cinema. A man was actually killed by the horses trampling him in the racing scene, which is something you will never ever be able to say about these over-used dime-a-dozen lame-duck "acting and effects of the newer age" films from TV and Hollywood hacks that steal all their ideas from actual artists. Your Superman analogy needs a little work. I guess since mediocrity is the thing these days, the youth don't know any different.

This is for everyone calling the 1959 "Epic" version of the film with Charleton Heston the original version. That is not the original version just the most known.Including the 2010 TV mini-series, there have been 5 versions made. 1907, 1925,1959, 2003, and 2010. I have seen them all except for the 1907(can't find a copy) and the 2010 versions. They are all decent in their own right as I expect this one to be.
And for those complaining about the religious aspects. remember this was made form a 1880 book titled ' Ben Hur: A Tale Of The Christ' so of course it will have some religious aspects.
Stop complaining and enjoy it for what it is. Another persons view on a book written more than 100 years ago.
I'll add my own review as soon as I see this one and it will be based on this movies merits alone.
Ray Winstone was the redeeming factor for this mini-series/ movie. A once only watch. Not an epic or a classic by any standard but for a low budget they did pretty well and kept me mildly entertained. Doesn't begin to compare to Spartacus: Blood and Sand however.
One of the greatest epic films ever created and in just moments its legacy is destroyed by garbage rewriting and questionable direction.
It is a damn shame that all the creativity and artistry was ripped from this once noble story for a cheap remake for TV saga.
Sometimes we have to step back and think do i have the right to REMAKE this movie. Just the title Ben Hur is cemented in time. How could abc even think they could or should do this. It is sad that grown men sat at a table and put their minds to this, Greed make big dollars is this why some good shows are taken off mid-season there's more i could say but this is not place to do it.
Because this was a TV movie, and NOT a Hollywood attempt to remake this classic, I am giving it a 3/5. For a Made for TV attempt it was pretty darn good, watchable for sure.
Of course nothing will ever touch the origonal classic, so comparing ANY attempt made today vs the classic version is like comparing Apples to Prunes, both fruit but Prunes will never be liked as much as Apples no matter what you do to the prune. Good analogy LMAO, well, I tried.

Quite appealing version considering it's been conceived for TV audiences. No real need to compare to the classic 1959 film, so "hold your horses" since there is so many ways to tell a story in cinema, especially when based on a novel written in 1880. I enjoyed.
Decent remake , I like it much better than the original , but I never could stomach anything Charlston Heston did..he couldn't act his way out of a paper bag! 4/5
They shouldn't have touched this classic. Period. Don't watch it because you'll just get torn to pieces inside if you ever seen the original Ben Hur movie.
i thought this was a decent watch.. it kept my attention and it have a good story line. a decent ending and the acting wasn't bad.. it was like a hbo or showtime made movie
There is no other like Charlton Heston but this adaptation of Ben Hur was above the par. A must see film which shows different insights into the times that the original did not do. Emotional, action packed, suspenseful and thrilling. 5/5
