In 1970s America, a detective works to bring down the drug empire of Frank Lucas, a heroin kingpin from Manhattan, who is smuggling the drug into the country in the coffins of soldiers returning from the Vietnam War.
It's a little long at nearly 3 hours, and it's supposed to be based on a true story but it's said that only about 20% of the film is actually accurate. All that aside this is good film making and one to watch 4/5..
Okay, it was 2 hour and more long gangster drama, and did got bored, in fact enjoyed every second of it, some amazing performances by Denzel Washington and must confessed though not a big fan of Russell Crowe, he acted brilliantly. The movie have the traces of Scarface but was original in many aspects. a good gangster drama worth watching. 5//5
The story was intriguing. I love the characters in this film. The Director made the people in the movie very human. I can understand the reasons and why they are doing what they are doing.
But, I did think that the movie was lacking much on the cinematography. It would probably be worth it to show some shots of the city overhead, some more scenes of the junkies abusing the drugs, or even a scene of how
Frank's mom ended up living in the new home. There was not a single transition to how she was after the day she moved in, to the day she was brought in to court.
Still, this was a good movie. I would suggest it to many people that would like the genre of Old Gangster movies. Its more of a storyline movie, than a character driven movie. Even though, the characters made the story what it really is.
Im not really into gangster films but this was a real suprise. Thought it was quite slow moving at first but i could understand that the characters needed building up. Reall well directed film and a good story, even if it was a bit too drawn out. 4/5
Another amazing film by director Ridley Scott (Alien, Gladiator).
Superb storyline - you can't go wrong with a true story.
Spectacular performances from both Denzel Washington and Russel Crowe.
Highly recommended for those who enjoyed films like "Blow" (another true story) and "Scarface." 5/5 stars.
"American Gangster" was a great film with a captivating plot and superb acting. The contrasting realms of life for Russel Crowe's character and Denzel Washington's Character really brought some depth to the film. I personally felt that 1960's America and Vietnam were poorly portraid. Playing some music and t.v. clips from the era just didn't cut it for me. Amazing to hear that this was a true story.
